He said I was the ‘perfect candidate’ for whatever surgery I wanted. I wasn’t given a consent form until 20 minutes before my procedure, and nobody reviewed it with me.”</p><h4 style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Realizing Something Was Wrong</strong></h4><p style="text-align:justify;">Initially, Hayden believed their surgeon’s reassurance that visual issues would resolve over time. “Around two months post-op, my eyes began to burn constantly, and the visual issues persisted. I followed my post-op care instructions exactly, but nothing improved.”</p><h4 style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Severe Impact on Daily Life</strong></h4><p style="text-align:justify;">“The regret and self-blame were overwhelming. I trusted a doctor to take care of me, but I felt betrayed,” Hayden shares. The constant burning pain led to two emergency room visits, but no doctor was able to help. Despite trying numerous treatments—including artificial tears, autologous serum tears, PRP, amniotic membrane contact lenses, and fish oil—the pain remained.</p><h4 style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Dismissal and Gaslighting by Medical Professionals</strong></h4><p style="text-align:justify;">Despite repeated complaints, Hayden’s surgeon continuously downplayed their symptoms. “He even gaslit me, saying he had ‘never seen these issues before.’ It wasn’t until I spoke out on social media that I realized I wasn’t alone. Thousands of others messaged me, including former patients of the same surgeon.”</p><h4 style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Emotional and Mental Toll</strong></h4><p style="text-align:justify;">The complications led to severe anxiety, depression, PTSD, and even suicidal thoughts. “For the first time in my life, I didn’t want to be here anymore. My family had to constantly watch over me as we searched for any sort of relief. Ironically, the same clinics treating post-LASIK complications were often owned by LASIK corporations. “Doctors admitted that more than half of their patients were suffering from the same issues.” This experience even led Hayden to change their major to optometry.</p><h4 style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Current Vision and Outlook</strong></h4><p style="text-align:justify;">“While my visual issues will likely never go away, my chronic eye pain has slowly improved. However, treating corneal neuralgia has been more expensive than contact lenses ever were—I’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars since my surgery nearly two years ago.”</p><h4 style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Regret and Advice to Others</strong></h4><p style="text-align:justify;">“I will always regret getting LASIK. If I can save even just one person from making the same mistake, I consider that a win. The laser vision correction industry is not being honest about its statistics and risks. I get messages daily from others who regret their surgery.”</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Hayden’s advice to those considering LASIK? “Save the health of your eyes for when you truly need surgery. Why risk your most vital sense for convenience? Needing corrective lenses is far better than being unable to see even with them.
